Abstract

This lecture introduces a novel water activation strategy using a photocatalytic, phosphine-mediated radical process that produces a PR3-H2O radical cation intermediate under mild, metal-free conditions. This intermediate undergoes sequential heterolytic and homolytic O-H bond cleavage to transfer both hydrogen atoms. In the second part, a strategy for C-H functionalization of pyridine via dearomatization/rearomatization will be presented, enabling large-scale synthesis of oxazino pyridines. Meta-functionalization is achieved through radical alkylation and ionic transformations, allowing access to meta-fluorinated and regioselectively para-alkylated pyridines. Applications include Cu-catalyzed meta-arylation, switchable para/meta-difluoromethylation, and pyridine skeletal editing.

Guest Introduction

Prof. Armido Studer is a Swiss-born chemist, born in 1967, specializing in organic chemistry. He completed his PhD at ETH Zurich, followed by postdoctoral research in Pittsburgh. He currently holds a full professorship at Westfälische Wilhelms-University Münster, Germany, and has received numerous accolades, including the Paracelsus Prize (2024) and Arthur C. Cope Award. Studer is a highly cited researcher, a member of multiple academies, and an ERC Advanced Grant recipient. His research contributions have earned international recognition, including visiting professorships in the U.S. and China.
